Why become a member?
The biggest reason is simply that your investment support is needed to establish a full-service, cooperatively-owned grocery store in downtown Troy.
A significant portion of the money needed to open and operate the store will come from our members as equity investments and member loans. And the amount of support we receive directly influences our ability to secure commercial loan funds. Your member support is the foundation for securing funds necessary for store design, equipment, start-up inventory and operating capital.
We need 1000 member-owners by opening in order to be a successful market. Join now to make the Troy Food Co-op a reality.
What does it mean to be a member-owner?
As a cooperative, Troy Food Co-op is owned by the people who use its services — you! As an owner you are entitled to be an active participant in the governance of the store ... your input, ideas, and suggestions will help shape the co-op. You also will receive discounts on store purchases, and you can help choose or serve on the Co-op Board of Directors.
Are there risks?
As with any business, your ownership share is subject to risk. We may not be able to generate the necessary financial resources; the co-op may not be successful. The member-selected co-op board would then determine how assets are distributed.
What about other members of my household?
Your store purchasing rights may be shared with other adult members of your household. Simply provide their names on your application. If they wish to also participate in the co-op's governance (i.e. they want their own vote), they should complete their own membership, as investment as a member-owner is required.
What does it cost to become a member-owner?
The investment to become a member is $150. There are no additional annual fees associated with your membership. We offer low-income payment plans and installment options. Contact us about these options.
How do I purchase a membership?
Easy! Fill out the application and complete your payment. Payment can be made safely and securely with your credit card. Or, if you prefer, you can mail your check.
